Hand-painted Wood Duck patch on a Richardson 256P Marsh Duck Camo rope trucker hat - True Originals

Why We Paint Instead of Print

UV-printed patches are everywhere right now. Full-color, photo-sharp, dirt cheap to produce at scale — it's easy to see why they've taken over so much of the hat world. We don't make them, and we're not going to start. Here's why.

What UV Printing Actually Is

UV printing is digital ink-jet printing cured instantly with UV light. It's a genuinely useful process — it handles gradients, fine text, and photo-realistic detail that embroidery can't touch, and because there's no per-color setup cost, it's fast and cheap to produce. None of that is a knock on the technology itself.

But here's the part that matters: UV printing works from a digital file. Once that file exists, patch number one and patch number 10,000 are identical, pixel for pixel, forever. That's the entire point of the process — infinite, perfect repeatability. It's also exactly why so many of these patches end up looking the same from brand to brand, hat to hat, person to person. The process is built for sameness.

Hand-Painted Can't Do That, and That's the Point

Every patch in our True Originals line is painted by hand, start to finish, with an actual brush. There's no file. There's no "print it again exactly the same." Even when we paint the same subject twice — another blue crab, another wood duck — the brushstrokes land differently, the color mixes a little differently, and the result is a different piece of art. Not a different print run. A different painting.

That's not a limitation we're working around. It's the actual value. A UV-printed patch is a copy of a file. A True Originals patch is the original — the only one that will ever exist in exactly that form.

Protected, Not Plastic

Once the paint is fully dry, every True Originals patch gets a protective topcoat, brushed on by hand — a separate finishing step after the painting itself is done, not baked into the paint. It seals and protects the artwork for everyday wear without flattening out the texture the brushwork leaves behind. You can still see the hand in it. It's just protected now, too.

This Line Isn't for Everyone, and That's Fine

True Originals isn't built for someone grabbing a hat on the way out the door. It's built for the person who already knows the difference between owning something and owning the only one — the collector who reads the maker's mark before the price tag, who'd rather have one piece nobody else can get than five that everybody has. If that's not you, there's no shortage of great embroidered and laser-engraved hats in the rest of our catalog, and we mean that sincerely.

But if it is you, the math is simple. You're not paying for a patch. You're paying for the hours of actual human attention that went into a piece of original art that exists exactly once, finished by hand, and gone for good the moment it sells. That's a fundamentally different thing than a print run, and it's priced like one — not like a mass-produced hat with a design slapped on it.

What You're Actually Paying For

A UV-printed patch is cheap to make because the hard part — the artwork — only has to happen once, ever, on a screen. After that, it's just printing copies. A hand-painted patch has no shortcut like that. Every single one requires the same amount of actual human attention, every time, which is exactly why no two will ever come out identical — and why, once a piece sells, we don't have another one exactly like it to send you instead.

FAQ

What's the difference between a hand-painted patch and a UV-printed patch? A UV-printed patch is a digital file printed with UV-cured ink, identical every time it's reproduced. A hand-painted True Originals patch is painted individually with a brush, so no two pieces are ever exactly alike, even when the subject is repeated.
Are hand-painted True Originals patches durable? Yes — once the paint fully dries, each patch gets a protective topcoat brushed on by hand to seal and protect the artwork for everyday wear.
Will two True Originals hats of the same animal or subject look identical? No. Even when we revisit a subject, each piece is painted fresh, so brushstrokes, color mixing, and small details will always differ from piece to piece.
Why does True Originals cost more than your other hats? The price reflects real, individual painting time on a piece of original art that exists exactly once — not a design that can be reproduced on demand like a printed or embroidered patch.
