The Ultimate Trucker Hat Guide: Richardson, Legacy & FlexFit Explained
Share
Not all trucker hats are built the same, and once you know what to look for, the difference is obvious. Here's the honest breakdown of the frames we build on, so you know exactly what you're getting before you order.
Richardson: The Classic Standard
Richardson is the most common frame in our catalog, and for good reason — it's the original trucker cap silhouette, trusted by custom hat makers nationwide. Within Richardson, we mainly build on three styles:
- Richardson 112 — the classic structured mid-profile trucker. Six-panel construction, 60/40 cotton-poly front panel, breathable mesh back, adjustable snapback. This is our most-used frame and the one most people picture when they think "trucker hat."
- Richardson 168 — a 7-panel flat bill build, higher profile, popular for a bolder, more structured look. Good for patches that want a bigger canvas.
- Richardson 111 — garment-washed, low-profile, and pre-softened for a broken-in feel right out of the box. If you don't like a stiff new hat, this is the one.
Legacy: Built for Detail Work
Legacy frames — mainly our Dashboard, Old Favorite, and Mid Pro styles — are what we reach for when a patch needs to be the star. Legacy's clean construction pairs especially well with laser-engraved leatherette, which is why you'll see it most often on our detail-heavy designs rather than embroidered ones. Same breathable mesh back and adjustable closure you'd expect, just a slightly different shape and finish than Richardson.
Yupoong FlexFit: No Snap, No Problem
FlexFit is the odd one out on this list because it skips the snapback entirely. Instead of an adjustable closure, it uses a stretch-fit band built into the hat, which gives you a snug, all-day hold without a plastic snap digging into the back of your head. It's genuinely the most-requested style from our corporate and bulk customers, and it's the frame we default to for most of our camo builds. The tradeoff is that it comes in general size ranges rather than one-size-fits-most, so double-check sizing before you order if you're on the small or large end.
Mesh, Materials & What Actually Matters
Regardless of frame, here's what we build into every hat: a breathable mesh back for airflow, clean stitching that won't unravel after a season of wear, and a patch that's either fully embroidered or laser-engraved into leatherette — never a flat screen print. That last part is the biggest quality signal in the entire trucker hat category. A printed logo cracks and fades. An embroidered or engraved one doesn't.

FAQ
Do all your hats fit true to size?
Richardson and Legacy styles use adjustable snapbacks that fit most adult head sizes. FlexFit uses a stretch band in set size ranges, so check the sizing note on that product before ordering.
Which frame lasts longest?
All of them hold up well with proper care — spot clean only, never machine wash. The patch construction (embroidered/engraved vs. printed) matters more for longevity than the frame choice.
