How to Clean and Care for Your Trucker Hat (Without Ruining the Patch)
Share
A good trucker hat should last years, not seasons — but only if you treat the patch right. Here's exactly how we tell customers to clean and care for a handmade trucker hat, whether it's embroidered, laser-engraved, or a true vintage patch.
Rule One: Never Machine Wash
This is the one that gets hats ruined. A washing machine (and especially a dryer) will warp the shape of the bill, loosen embroidery threads, and can crack or curl a laser-engraved leatherette patch beyond repair. No exceptions — not on a gentle cycle, not in a mesh bag. Every hat we make is built to be spot cleaned, not machine washed.
The Right Way to Clean a Trucker Hat
- Use a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush, lightly dampened with cool water
- Add a small amount of mild soap — dish soap or a gentle detergent works fine
- Spot clean the dirty area only, working in gentle circular motions
- Wipe away soap residue with a clean, damp cloth
- Air dry only — lay flat or set on a hat form, never near direct heat
Avoid soaking the whole hat, even by hand. Saturating the front panel can warp the shape and, on rope trucker or foam front styles, can loosen the glue bond holding those layers together.
Caring for Embroidered Patches
Embroidered patches are more durable than most people expect — the thread is stitched through the fabric, not sitting on top of it — but repeated hard scrubbing will eventually fray thread edges. Light spot cleaning is all they need. If a patch gets a small stray thread, resist the urge to pull it; snip it close to the surface with small scissors instead.
Caring for Laser-Engraved Leatherette
Leatherette patches are more sensitive to water than embroidery. Keep moisture minimal, wipe rather than scrub, and never let a leatherette patch sit wet. Direct sun and high heat can also cause leatherette to dry out and crack over time, so if a hat isn't in regular rotation, store it somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight.
Special Care for True Vintage Patches
If you own one of our True Vintage hats, treat the patch even more gently. These are genuine decades-old patches — not reproductions — and the goal isn't to make them look brand new. A little honest age is part of what makes them real. Spot clean minimally, avoid any scrubbing on the patch itself, and let it air dry completely before wearing again.
Storage Tips
- Store hats brim-up on a shelf or hat rack, not crushed in a drawer
- Avoid stacking multiple hats directly on top of each other
- Keep hats out of direct sunlight when not in use to prevent fading
- Let a sweaty hat air out and fully dry before storing it away
FAQ
Can I put my trucker hat in the dishwasher or washing machine?
No — both will damage the shape and the patch. Spot clean by hand only.
How do I get rid of hat odor?
Light hand-washing of the sweatband area with mild soap and water, followed by full air drying, usually resolves it. Avoid fabric sprays directly on embroidered or leatherette patches.
Will spot cleaning damage a vintage patch?
Gentle spot cleaning is fine, but treat vintage patches more carefully than new ones — minimal moisture, no scrubbing.
